In most areas of coastal Florida, boating season is in full swing and it’s time to check your vessel so it’s ready to get back out on the water.  Furthermore, you want to make sure that your first launch of the season goes as safely and smoothly as possible.  In order to ensure that your first launch of the season is “uneventful”, here are a few tasks to complete beforehand:

Check your spark plugs and fittings – make sure that they are secure and aren’t loose or cracked.  Back off the tension on the plug in order to check it.  You should also make sure that the center pin located inside of the rubber hasn’t started to deteriorate.  Be sure you check the rubber boot for deterioration as well.

Conduct a full perimeter check of your vessel – are there any cracks, dings, or other damage to your propellers? Is it aligned properly or out of alignment? This not only causes drive train problems, it will negatively impact you gas mileage.

Examine all fittings – they may need to be lubricated.  Do so as needed.

Get your engine ready – the engine is the heart of any vessel so you want to ensure that it is cared for and maintained properly.  Change the fuel as well as the oil and oil filters.  If there’s any moisture in your fuel tank, there are additives that will help you clear up the problem.  Do this before you put new fuel in it.

Inspect the hull – although this is just common sense, you want to examine the hull for any blistering, chipping, or peeling and do any necessary repairs before putting your boat out on the water.  Once you’ve completed this task, give your vessel a thorough cleaning and washing.

Is there a life jacket for every person that will be on board? The US Coast Guard requires this.  Furthermore, life jackets need to be in good condition and replaced if they aren’t.  Check for buoyance as well as cracks and leaks.  Purchase new ones if needed.  You should also check your fire extinguishers and recharge any that are out of date.  Finally, make sure you have a fully stocked first aid or medical kit on board as well.

Look your registration over and make sure that everything is up-to-date – you should also make sure that you have purchased or renewed your boat insurance.  Remember, making sure that your investment is protected also protects you and your family as well as anyone else on board.

Make sure the battery is fully charged – you can take your boat battery to an auto parts store to check the charge, just like you’d do with the one in your vehicle.  Check your battery connections.  If they need to be cleaned, use a wire brush to do so.
